Austin so far

A brief update on my escapades and existence in my new hometown.

Austin is an amazing city for live music. Since Ive been here Ive seen world-class music on what I would typically expect to be uneventful nights of the week (e.g. Hot Club of Cowtown on a Tuesday). Im also meeting lots of (relatively) younger folks who are making great original country and western swing. The bluegrass scene exists, but it seems to be pretty small relative to the country scene.

Cooper McBean and the Vested Interests got back together and played a show back in January before Cooper left to go on tour with The Devil Makes Three. We added a bass player, Anderson, to our group, which really helps fill out the sound and gives Cooper freedom to take solos (yes!). We have more shows in Austin coming up in April once everyone is back in town.

I’m doing a little bit of teaching, a lot of getting to know people, and too much traveling to really get to know this city well. I’m looking forward to having a few weeks in April to get better acquainted with Austin. Until then, its back to California, then off on tour for a bit in the Pacific northwest with Rita Hosking and Cousin Jack!
